Squarespace has raised prices repeatedly, and a closed platform gives you no way to shop around while keeping your site. Your renewal is whatever they decide it is. WordPress hosting is a competitive market you can leave at any time, typically $10–30/month.

Every post carries a date in its URL

Squarespace stamps blog URLs with the publish date, so /blog/2024/3/14/your-post is what Google indexed. Those addresses look dated to a reader and pin your content to a moment. They can be cleaned up in a migration, but only if every old one is redirected.

You are renting the template, not owning it

Templates cannot be exported, customisation stops where the platform decides, and developer options end at injected code. On WordPress the theme is a folder of files that any developer can pick up and extend.

The export is partial and everyone finds out late

Squarespace exports a WordPress-format XML file, which sounds like the whole answer. It carries pages, blog posts and images. It does not carry product pages, album pages, custom CSS, index pages or form submissions. The gap is discovered mid-move.

The XML file is a starting point, not a migration. What matters is the part it does not contain.

Every dated blog URL

Each /blog/YYYY/M/D/slug address gets a 301 to its clean equivalent. This is the single biggest source of lost traffic in a Squarespace move, because the platform generated hundreds of them and nobody has a list.

Search rankings

Page titles, meta descriptions, heading structure, image alt text and structured data all carry over. Search Console is reconnected before launch and watched for six weeks after it.

Content the export misses

Product and album pages, index page sections and custom CSS do not come through the XML export. We rebuild them by hand rather than discovering the hole after cutover.

Forms and their destinations

Squarespace form blocks and their storage do not export. Forms are rebuilt and tested end to end, delivering to wherever you want them, not to a dashboard you are about to lose access to.

Including the honest answer about that WordPress export file.

01Squarespace has a WordPress export. Why do I need help?
Because it is partial, and the gaps are the expensive part. The XML export carries pages, blog posts and images. It does not carry product pages, album pages, index page sections, custom CSS, or form submissions, and crucially it does not produce a redirect map. Import that file into a fresh WordPress site and you will have most of your content at completely different URLs, which is precisely the scenario that loses rankings.
02What happens to my dated blog URLs?
They get redirected. Squarespace generates /blog/2024/3/14/post-title, and Google has indexed every one. We inventory them all, map each to a clean /blog/post-title equivalent, and 301 the old address permanently. You keep the accumulated ranking value and lose the dated look. If you prefer to keep the dated structure, we can do that too, the point is that the decision is yours and nothing 404s either way.
03Will my site look the same?
As close as you want. Squarespace templates cannot be exported, so the design is rebuilt, which means you can have a like-for-like reproduction or a refresh at the same tier price, as long as the page structure and content hold. We will tell you honestly which template features have a clean WordPress equivalent and which need a different approach.
04What will it cost to run afterwards?
WordPress hosting suitable for a small business runs $10–30/month, paid to the host directly. Compared with a Squarespace Business plan the running cost usually drops, and unlike Squarespace you can move hosts whenever you like, which is the actual protection against future price rises.
05Do I lose anything by leaving?
A few things genuinely do not transfer: form submission history stored in Squarespace, any Acuity scheduling data tied to the account, and analytics history inside their dashboard. Export what you can before cancelling, and we will flag anything else specific to your site during the audit rather than after.
06I sell products on Squarespace. Does that change anything?
Yes, in two ways. Your catalogue exports as a separate CSV that needs reshaping before WooCommerce will accept it correctly, and your product URLs (/shop/p/ or /store/p/) need mapping alongside the dated blog paths. The image handling also becomes time-critical: product images are links to Squarespace CDN, so they must be pulled into your own media library before you cancel.
